Conversely, an "earnings miss" can cause sharp declines. Revenue growth is equally important as it shows whether the company's top-line business is expanding. A company can beat on EPS through cost-cutting while missing on revenue, which often signals underlying weakness.
Earnings proximity is a critical factor in trade timing. Stocks tend to become more volatile as their earnings date approaches, and holding positions through earnings carries significant event risk.
